Benioff & Weiss’ Star Wars Trilogy Would Have Explored Jedi Origin

Not long after Lucasfilm announced a Star Wars trilogy helmed by D.B Weiss and David Benioff, it was revealed that the duo wanted to explore the galaxy beyond the Skywalker saga. Fans speculated that the former Game of Thrones showrunners would bring the franchise to the Old Republic — an era that has never been explored outside video games and comics.

They weren’t entirely wrong. Variety recently reported that Weiss and Benioff were looking to explore an even lesser known time period during the Old Republic period, thousands of years before the events of the current Star Wars saga, before the Jedi Order even existed.

The report states, “Benioff and Weiss had ambitious plans to take the ‘Star Wars’ universe in a new direction,” revealing that “The ‘Star Wars’ period the pair was interested in exploring was how the Jedi came to exist.” Unfortunately, it seems that Lucasfilm executives had their own ideas concerning how best to approach the trilogy and they began to see “their visions for the films diverge during meetings last summer.”

In Star Wars lore, the Jedi Order was founded on the island of Ahch-To by the Prime Jedi. The history of the Jedi was briefly teased in Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, which saw Luke Skywalker in his self-imposed exile, studying and protecting the sacred texts of the first Jedi Temple before the ghost of Master Yoda destroyed it all.

The future of the Star Wars franchise remains unclear. The Disney+ streaming service is set to offer a variety of new Star Wars-related shows such as The Mandalorian and shortly afterwards, J.J Abrams’ The Rise of Skywalker will conclude the expansive Skywalker saga that began in 1979, while hopefully paving the way for entirely new stories.
